It is everyone's responsibility to comply with anti-discrimination legislation. The Companion Card is a tool that can assist organisations to comply with this legislation.
Venue/activity operators should bear in mind that not every individual with a disability who requires a companion will have a Companion Card. They may be an overseas visitor, they may have a temporary disability, or they may not have heard about the program or have chosen not to apply. Your obligation, under the disability anti-discrimination legislation, applies to all people with a disability - not just those that hold a Companion Card.
Remember, it is not mandatory for people with a disability to hold a Companion Card; it is just one tool to assist industry and individuals to negotiate the requirement of a companion ticket.
It is up to the venue/activity and the individual to negotiate alternative ways to verify the need for a companion ticket.
Sharing non-identifying statistics with the Companion Card program will have a variety of evaluation benefits for both the program and industry. The Companion Card team will be able to monitor the use of the Companion Card, and how many Companion Tickets are issued; to inform an understanding of the impact of the Companion Card program.
